Meet Tim Ellis

BA (Hons) BSc (Hons) MHSc (Hons)

Principal Physiotherapist

Expertise. Insight. Care.

Tim treats all musculoskeletal conditions, from acute injuries to long-standing pain. With over 27 years of clinical experience, Tim works with patients across the full spectrum of physiotherapy needs — including neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, foot, and ankle issues, as well as post-surgical rehabilitation, sports injuries, and persistent or complex presentations. His approach is centred on restoring movement, improving strength, and giving patients the confidence to return to the activities that matter most.

Tim’s specialist focus lies in the relationship between hip function and the lower back — an area in which he has developed a deep clinical understanding over decades of practice. He believes these regions work as an integrated system: when one isn’t moving well, the other compensates, often leading to stubborn pain patterns. Tim’s strength is in identifying the subtle mechanical links that other clinicians may miss, then designing treatment plans that address the true cause of dysfunction rather than simply managing symptoms.

In addition to his musculoskeletal expertise, Tim has advanced training in men’s health and urology-related physiotherapy, supporting patients with concerns such as pelvic floor dysfunction, urinary symptoms, post-prostate surgery rehabilitation, erectile or pelvic pain issues, and age-related pelvic health changes. His care is discreet, evidence-based, and grounded in clear communication — helping men feel comfortable, understood, and empowered at every stage of their treatment.

At Combined Clinics Physiotherapy in Darlinghurst, Tim integrates hands-on therapy, targeted exercise retraining, and the latest clinical technologies — including VALD performance testing, Dynamo strength assessment, focused shockwave therapy, and diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound. His whole-body, personalised approach ensures that every patient receives thoughtful, comprehensive care designed to create meaningful, lasting change.

Tim’s Story: From Ancient Worlds to Modern Healing

Before becoming a physiotherapist, Tim spent six years as an archaeologist with the Museum of London and as a tour guide for the British Museum. His work took him beneath the city streets and deep into human history, uncovering how people lived, worked, and adapted over time. That early training in observation, pattern-recognition, and human behaviour still shapes how he approaches every patient he meets today.

While studying physiotherapy, Tim worked as a chef in Covent Garden, a role that honed his precision, creativity, and appreciation for the craft of care. The discipline required in a professional kitchen—timing, accuracy, and genuine pride in each task—now underpins his clinical practice. It fostered the methodical and thoughtful style that has become his signature approach to assessment, treatment, and long-term rehabilitation.

Physiotherapy became the perfect meeting point for Tim’s passions: science, history, and human connection. It offered the opportunity to blend anatomical understanding with empathy, and technical skill with real-world communication. For Tim, helping patients heal, restore movement, and regain confidence is not just a profession but a chance to make a meaningful and lasting difference in people’s lives.

After qualifying in London in 1998 and completing his Master’s degree in Sydney in 2001, Tim built an international career across the UK and Australia. He led Excel Physiotherapy & Wellness in Sydney for more than a decade, mentoring over forty physiotherapists and helping thousands of patients improve their mobility and wellbeing. Today, at Combined Clinics, Tim continues that mission with renewed focus, advanced technology, and a deeply personal approach to care

Beyond the Clinic

Tim is also an award-winning author. His first novel, The Secret Diaries of Juan Luis Vives became an Amazon bestseller, celebrated for its depth, insight, and humanity. He is currently working on its sequel, weaving together themes of truth, loyalty, and the resilience of the human spirit. Writing has become a natural extension of Tim’s curiosity and his desire to understand people on a deeper, more human level.

A lifelong athlete, Tim competed in the 400 metres until the age of 38 and comes from a passionate soccer family. This athletic upbringing gives him a first-hand understanding of movement, recovery, and performance — experience that continues to shape his work with both everyday patients and active individuals alike. The discipline and motivation learned on the track still guide his clinical approach today.

Tim has lived in Elizabeth Bay for twenty three years and is a long-standing member of Fitness First Kings Cross and an avid gym-goer who enjoys working with fellow members and Pilates students in their rehabilitation programs. He is equally committed to supporting older adults in the community to maintain strength, confidence, and mobility. He has collaborated closely with GPs, doctors, and local specialists to ensure integrated, evidence-based care for his patients.

Outside the clinic, Tim enjoys a grounded and creative life. He loves gardening, baking, long walks, and is a devoted dog-dad to Chester, who keeps him active and endlessly entertained. Whether uncovering stories from the past or helping someone move pain-free again, Tim’s purpose remains constant: to understand people, to heal where possible, and to bring care and meaning to every encounter.
